The Freedom of Responsibility

Can we talk about a big word today? Don’t worry—it’s not a tongue twister, and it’s certainly not a word meant to make you sound sophisticated. It’s actually quite simple: responsibility.

Now, responsibility is one of those words that’s often misunderstood. People tend to associate it with blame—as though when someone says, “It’s your responsibility,” they really mean, “If anything goes wrong, it’s your fault.” But that’s not the way I want you to think about it.

What if responsibility isn’t about blame at all, but about freedom?

Instead, whenever you hear the word responsibility, I want you to think: I have a choice. Because, truly, responsibility ceases to exist in the absence of choice. If you have no options, then you can’t be responsible for the outcome.

If you had no choice, could you honestly hold yourself responsible for what followed?

I write to you about this because there will be times when life feels narrow—when your thoughts seem trapped and your world feels like it’s shrinking. You might feel as if you have no choice, as though life is dragging you toward an inevitable destination. But it’s in those very moments that I hope these words find you: You always have a choice.

Even when circumstances don’t change, can you choose how you meet them?

Even when options seem to disappear, there’s still the possibility of choosing a different way to see, feel, or respond. That choice may be quiet and internal, but it is no less powerful.

You can’t control whether it rains on your birthday, or whether the boy next door greets you with a smile. You can’t always control whether your project becomes a hit or falls flat. But you can choose what you make of these happenings—and that, dear dreamer, is your power. That is your responsibility.

What if your greatest power lies not in changing life, but in choosing your response to it?

So when it rains on your birthday, instead of feeling wronged by life or disappointed by the weather, you could smile and think, showers of blessings. And if you’re playful enough, you could even dance in the rain. The number of ways you can respond to life is infinite—that’s how much freedom you truly have.

How much lighter would life feel if you remembered—again and again—that you always have options?

A helpful question to carry with you through life is this: What are my options? or How differently can I respond to this situation? When you ask sincerely, the right response—one that brings peace, clarity, and growth—will always make itself known.
