“Thought creates our world, and then says ‘I didn’t do it’ ” David Bohm
Syd Banks rightly noted that the missing link that people all over the world are looking for is thought. Depending on your level of awareness, thought may seem completely irrelevant to your experience…nothing more than a by-product. After all, you get angry because people say and do stupid things and that’s that. You get stressed because you have endless tasks to accomplish and the deadlines are fast approaching. The list could go on and on depicting how our individual circumstances directly impact our experience of life. It would take us to really slow down to observe how the fine pattern of thoughts are interwoven in all these experiences. It’s like, say, wanting a butterfly to land in the middle of your palm. For that to happen, you need to be still. Any form of aggression on your path may probably scare it off. So take a few deep breaths. First, in… hold it… and now out. Let’s repeat that one more time, in… hold… and out. In that stillness created by the deep breaths, let’s go on to identify the principle of thought in our experience.
Stillness is required to observe the role of thought
Let’s start with when someone does something to make you angry. That’s quite common to all human experiences. The first impression (which is usually wrong) we have is that their actions brought about our fury. If they hadn’t done what they did, then we wouldn’t have been angry. But can I ask that you consider another possibility? Could it be possible that they did whatever it is that they did yet you wouldn’t get angry? Or are you saying that in all the world there can be only one reaction to their actions, which is anger? I bet in your own life, there may have been times when others have done worse things but didn’t even evoke the slightest rage in you (if that’s not true about you, it’s okay).
In between the action and reaction is always the layer of thought.
The truth is that as thinking beings, we humans do not directly perceive anything without it going through our filter of thoughts. We literally have thoughts about everything. We have words and actions we label as offensive and disrespectful and we feel offended and disrespected when people use those words on us, not just because they said those words but because of the meaning we have attached to them. In between the action and reaction is always the layer of thought. When you see this, you cease to become fixated and the immeasurable possibilities of life become open to you where you can actually choose how you want to respond. Maybe, you like to respond with empathy “oh, that fellow is hurting and is unconsciously hurting others by words or actions” or you could be tolerant and understanding “all this person is saying and doing has nothing to do with me. They’re just having a hard time.” Whatever response you choose will determine your experience irrespective of what is done or said to you. So actually, no one wields the control over your experience in life but you.
Through the right use of thought, you can free yourself to the infinite potential of life
If you’re anything like the rest of us, then you sometimes innocently use the principle of thought against yourself by creating experiences of hostility, strife, jealousy and self-pity. The truth is right under our noses but we so often miss it. That’s why this ought to be a practice, not because it is difficult. On the contrary, it’s the most natural thing to do. But we need to have that stillness to observe the principle of thought that underlies all human experience.
It moves up and goes down It swings to the left and to the right But through it all, we’re okay We’re always okay
Therefore when we’re okay It doesn’t mean the sail is smooth Or the winds are calm It just means we’re anchored to okayness
Like the sky gets cloudy only to become clear Things only get worse to become better Therefore, wait when all seems boisterous Hold on and you’ll witness the miracle
I promise you it’s all well It can’t be any other way That’s the beauty of the design It can only be okay It can only be well
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I like to think about life this way: Imagine a maestro putting his acts together to produce a masterpiece; one that would stand out for ages as the perfection of art. He meticulously creates his characters and assigns roles that suits the minutest detail about them. Only that His characters are unaware of everything. They think they are individuals with a mind of their own, a life of their own and masters of their own destiny. And to a certain extent, they aren’t far from right. They observe the amazing things they are able to create and innovate on daily basis and can’t help but think they’re the main deal.
But well above them, the maestro looks on with keen interest and with some kind of cheer in His heart. He just loves the twists and turns. Not that they’re surprising to Him but He just relishes how even the seemingly irrelevant events add up to the grand scene of life. He comes in only when needed to grant perhaps an insight, healing or grace and then throws Himself into the viewing seat in eagerness to know what happens next although He has the blue print. Yet still, his characters have absolutely no idea about what’s going on. They think they are individuals with a mind of their own, a life of their own and that they are masters of their own destiny.
The path to take is imprinted in the fabric of the journeyer.
Do you realize you’re a character in the grand play of life? Or perhaps you may have gotten yourself busy and lost in the complexities of day to day living that you just can’t imagine that life could be that simple? However lost you are, you’re never too lost to embrace life anew. To trust that the same intelligence that spins the planets in their orbits and causes the lilies of the field to grow and be clothed has a purpose for your life, and life in general. Listen, and you’ll hear it. It’s right there in the recess of your heart. The truth is ever near you. For the path to take is imprinted in the fabric of the journeyer.
A simple trust in the beauty of the design of life will free you from the torment of the fearful mind and help you be in sync with life. You’ll be more attuned to the seasons of life. You’ll just know when it’s time for a change. For everything within you bears witness to it and there’s a surge of momentum that just drives you from within towards change. That’s the simplicity of life. I could make it a lot harder for myself and others, but why would I?
Many are the desires of your heart Tumultuous the rising tides of your expectations Your eyes are heavy with sleep But your mind binges on activity You wonder if you are able Whether you are good enough
But all it takes is one moment One glorious moment of insight Suddenly everything comes alive The once impassable slum becomes a joyous path Where dreams and reality share no boundary And impossibility becomes a bygone
