The Power of Words

Image is in public domain

Words are powerful but, I must quickly add, their power isn’t an inherent quality but is more about the reality they point to. Words are pointers to experiences but not those experiences in and of themselves. What makes them special isn’t the specific alphabets or sounds that constitute them; even these have to be processed mentally to have any meaning or purpose. It comes as no surprise to me when words uttered can totally piss one person off while making another happy, all at once. Our mental filters depending on our neurological makeup among other conscious and unconscious factors bring about such observable differences.

There is another dimension to words that I have come to experience and rely on. It is the penetrating quality of words that go beyond the complexity of the mental realm into the simplicity of the heart. I used to think that I was supposed to understand every word I heard or read. I feel a bit of shame writing this now (most think I understand all these stuff) but actually chunk of the words that have had tremendous impact on my life are those that I still have difficulty understanding. It’s that bad that if you ever asked me to explain them to you, you’ll wind up getting more confused.

With time I have found that the difficulty I experience in trying to explain these words to people is because I’m trying to engage them mentally with words that reside not in my head but deeper in my heart. I didn’t need to understand the words and neither do they. We can simply let the words be, and allow them to point our souls towards the experience they are tied to. We can allow them awaken in us the entirety of the emotions they embody. The strife to mentally label, process and interpret words don’t allow the words to fulfill their ultimate purpose as guides and pointers. The little caveat here is that in scholarly settings, there is a more rigid structure and laid down procedure for analyzing and interpreting words, so that’s quite different. What I’m writing about here is less scholarly. It’s more personal and flexible. It has to do with walking your own path in the journey of life.

A good exercise for being less “heady” with words is by asking yourself after you hear or read some words, “How do these words make me feel?” This question shifts your focus from the noisy mental space to the calmer recess of your heart. If the words make you happy, please don’t try to figure out why you’re happy. That’s counterproductive. Simply bask in the feeling of happiness. As you do this, you’ll realize that certain ideas begin to come to you. It may be instantaneous or more gradual; it doesn’t really matter. You don’t run after them, they just come to you. It is what people call insight (which is a sight from within). The moment that happens, you know that you have had personal experience with the words that even a thousand lifetimes of obsessive reasoning can never give.

Your Problems and You

Image is in public domain

What if what you feel at this moment isn’t the problem?
What if what you went through, are going through, and will ever go through aren’t either?
‘Then what is the problem?’ you might ask.
And I respond by asking, ‘must there be a problem?’
Must there always be something wrong that needs your immediate attention and touch of correction?
What if the real culprit, I mean the real problem, is that you go around thinking there’s a problem?
Life isn’t perfect, they say, but who defines perfection anyways?
Is it the earth-bound mind with all its biases and preferences?
The same that is subject to conditioning from sources it is often oblivious of?

What if life were perfect, already as it is but just that we think the contrary?
What if what we call problems are actually opportunities- blessings in disguise- waiting to be embraced and harnessed?
What if what we think makes us miserable is actually what beautifies us?
And how quick we are to mistaken that beauty for misery!
So I ask again, what is your problem?
What is that which upsets your heart and burdens your mind?
Can you in a moment of child-like dumbness enquire about this…?
Why do you consider that issue a problem?
If you didn’t consider it a problem, how different would your life be?

Would it make sense to invest all that time and attention into overcoming your problems?
I bet you would go on with your life regardless and live the life of an overcomer.
Living the life of an overcomer without fighting a war… sounds absurd, right?
But we forget that the recognition of our “problems” as a non-issue is in itself a battle won.
Once you think differently about your problems this way, they seem to work overtime.
They begin to show all their nuances in a bid to give us a myriad of reasons to worry.
That’s a myriad of arsenal thrown against us.
Tell me if surviving this onslaught is something to be taken for granted.
It’s about time you appreciated your resilience and quiet tenacity in this game of hearts and minds called life.

Problems are just thoughts, mindsets which always propagate themselves.
They exist because we are fixated on our own expectations, which are not actually ours.
What they actually are are the results of generations of conditioning handed us.
The ground on which the towering edifice of problems is built is fickle.
The problems themselves look ginormous but at the root, they’re caving in.
The caving in experience come as glimpses of freedom which ease our discomfort and pain.
In conclusion, when we see that the problem is not really the problem but our perception is, we’re free from the vicious problem- solution cycle.

THE DIVINE EXCHANGE

Image is in public domain

There is the belief of a separate self
One that stresses the “me-and-my-life” story
But that isn’t the case for just you or anyone else
This is all of us; this is the human condition
Beyond the tiny lens of the personal self
There is the grand view of the universal self
Which is our shared essence of pure spirit
Inhabiting and holding the form of humanness
Reminding us to take a pause from the scene
To appreciate the grand play of life

And in gratitude, be grateful
Be grateful for the gifts that surround you
The gift of family, and the gift of friends
The gift of music, and the gift of laughter
And ultimately, the gift of life
For a grateful heart is truly blessed
Blessed to touch the soul of life
To savour its sweetness beyond story
And its perfection beyond expectation
Gratitude is indeed a beautiful thing!

Peace is your birthright and your essence
For you are formed and sustained by it
You are surrounded by peaceful currents
Underneath the turmoil of the world
You have peace with yourself and with God
Therefore approach the throne of grace
In full assurance of love and faith
For you are held and loved by God
Allow the currents of peace lead
Steering you to paths of destiny

Understand what all you experience is
It is just a product of your thought
It is simply a bodily response
To all that’s going on in your head
It has less to do with what’s on in life
Let the agitated stream of thoughts settle
And you will see with clarity
The right step to take will be obvious
And the problem will be less problematic
For in the clarity of mind, miracles happen

Take time out for personal reflections
Reflect on love and the sacredness of life
Exchange your guilt for quiet confidence and trust
Exchange depression for light and innocence
Allow your inner child to be reborn
To see the world again with awe
And to enjoy its simple pleasures
To be in harmony with nature
And trust the perfection of its design
Touch that space of limitless potential!

Salvation is Now

All I can do is write. To write more and think less, for the complex patterns wound by the mental activity of thinking only makes things harder than they really are. In moments when what appears to be your weakness stares you in the face and your mind accusingly points at you, to where can you turn? When you feel small, frail and emotionally isolated, into what can you plug to have a sense of oneness, safety and worth? A place of refuge is all the soul seeks in such times.

In a mental world that seems to be influenced by a plethora of both conscious and unconscious factors, I’m often left in bewilderment at some of the experiences I have, that too with the least provocation. Like how shame and a sense of inadequacy takes over when I’m unable to live up to my expectations of self-expression and interpersonal relationships.
But I have come to see life as moment to moment. It is a moment’s time, then is gone forever. Hence being in the flow of life means living moment to moment. Not allowing the heaviness of the past moment to obscure the brightness of the current moment. For in every moment, life manifests all there is. All I see is NOW, that’s all there is and will ever be.

When in your life have you ever experienced your past without it being just a thought about your past?

Someone

Someone once asked the piercing question, “When in your life have you ever experienced your past without it being just a thought about your past?” And the simple answer is ‘Never’.
We literally have to drag along some event from months, days, weeks or even hours ago from wherever into NOW via thought or memory in order to experience them. Why can’t we just go back into time and relive them? We can’t because what we call past no longer exists. It did exist at some point in the NOW but not any longer. Our relationship with the past will be reformed when we really see this fact. Considering this also makes each moment of life both empty and full, all at once. Empty because it is rid of the illusionary control of the past and full because you are alive to all of the limitless opportunities of life.
