Your Career And You

โ€œA customer is the most important visitor in our premises. He is not dependent on us, we are dependent on him. He is not an interruption in our work, he is the purpose of it. He is not an outsider in our business, he is part of it.โ€

Mahatma Gandhi

We all love to be professionals and to have fulfilling careers as youth. The twinkle in our eyes as we go through arduous academic tasks is that we would soon leave the confines of school and be integrated into the workplace as doctors, lawyers, engineers, researchers etc. That is often the goal that motivates us to burn the midnight oil and to strive for mastery and academic excellence.

Although this is a worthwhile goal (absolutely worth the sacrifice), we often lose sight of the essence and significance of our career. There is a lot we stand to gain from our chosen career like prestige, a good income, and all the societal and professional privileges attached but at their core, our careers are nothing more than service rendered to fellow man.

At the heart of the evolution of careers is to meet the growing needs of man. When you have a problem with your piping system you know who to callโ€ฆa plumber. When your car breaks down, you need a mechanic. When you are feeling sick, you need a health professional; and the list goes on. Imagine there were no pipes, who would even know who a plumber is or what he does? The word โ€œplumberโ€ would probably not exist in even our most advanced dictionaries.

It is often tempting to build empires out of our careers where we reign supreme as kings over our pitiable subjects. This is especially the case when our career sticks a lot of feathers in our caps. Suddenly, the people who afforded us the opportunity of relevance become more of a nuisance and a hindrance to our โ€œprofessionโ€.

You could walk into an institution and find employees and even business owners who are downrightly rude and painfully arrogant. Like a lost dog, they stand with their tail raised and with much hoarseness of voice bark fiercely at those in need of their services.

While it is true that not all clients are easy-going and compliant, the good book gives us an excellent strategy for tolerating such individuals. Proverbs 15:1 tells us โ€œa gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.โ€ When we encounter such clients our frequency of gentility should be raised; to the point that it accommodates their idiosyncrasies. Oftentimes, it is the most unfriendly clients that need help the most.

It is also important for us to be conscious of who we are. Who are you? It is easier to answer this question by noting what you are not. You are not your possessions (you just have them), and you are not your profession (it is what you do).

When we become too attached to our profession, we think that is our identity; โ€œIโ€™m an engineerโ€, โ€œIโ€™m a musicianโ€, โ€œIโ€™m a lawyerโ€. In reality, you are not all these things. None of us are! They are capacities in which we function; services we provide to contribute to the overall furtherance of society.

We all have a role to play in making our world a better place. Thank God for the wonderful careers we have! Letโ€™s take advantage of these careers to serve our hearts out. Remember, our careers should not be the reason for being high minded but a glorious opportunity for us to roll up our sleeves to do the needful.

The Other Ten Commandments Of Contentment

Quit worrying about tomorrow (when that big break is going to come, where youโ€™ll end up in the next ten years etc.) or languishing in the events of the past (why things happened the way they did, why you did what you did etc.). Life is NOW. In the HERE and NOW is where the true rhythm of life is heard. Donโ€™t allow the anxieties of the future and the regrets of the past obscure the wonderful life available to you NOW. Wouldnโ€™t it be a shame to have a wonderful life but not realize it?

No two days are equal. They are unique in every way and present their own opportunities. Sleeping at night ought to be an act of self-purification and cleansing where we let go the attachment to yesterday and all its events especially the hurts, disappointments, failed attempts and resentment. Each waking day is sacred and should be embraced with an adventurous soul that has been liberated from the chains of yesterday.

What shall it profit a man to gain the world but lose his soul? What benefit is to be gained by rushing through a field of roses without taking the time to take in the aliveness of their bright colours and the heavenly smell that fills the air? You arenโ€™t here for just the journey; but the roses and the beauty of all creation also.

Being against yourself doesnโ€™t make life any easier. You may not like a few (or a lot) of things about yourself but self-resentment is the highway to misery no matter how much you change about yourself. Practice self- compassion. Be graceful to yourself whenever you misstep. It is perfectly ok. Youโ€™re learning, youโ€™re growing.

No one owes you anything. If someone goes out of their way to say or do something nice for you then itโ€™s definitely something to be grateful for. When you forgo any entitlement mentality, youโ€™ll realize that you have a lot to be grateful for. Count your blessings.

No man (or woman) is insignificant no matter their social status. All men are masterpieces of the Creator; they proceed from Him and are connected to Him. Thus what it means to truly honour the Creator (God) is to esteem fellow men as His reflection.

When you forget that life is a full contact game, everything will be a matter of life and death and youโ€™ll soon find yourself limited by the fear of anything that looks like a threat. This is the game of life. Youโ€™re not assured of success at every turn but you can be sure that with every effort made, thereโ€™ll be a surge in adrenaline that will cause you to relish each passing moment.

For love to flourish, there must be space- space for others to feel at home and be comfortable in their own skin. Imposing your perspectives on others only makes them a shadow of who they truly are, and makes you assume more control over them than necessary. Love them, correct them where necessary, and let them be.

If something doesnโ€™t feel quite right to you, itโ€™s okay to give it a pass. Youโ€™re not here to do everything but to do those things which resonate with you for in them lie your purpose. You donโ€™t need the majority to agree with you. Take that little step of courage to say YES to what feels right to you, and NO or NOT YET to what doesnโ€™t quite feel right.

Complaining makes even the sweetest of wine taste soar. When there is gratitude in your heart, it doesnโ€™t matter what is in front of you, it all tastes pleasant.

When you say that you’re young what do you mean, really? Is it because you’re a certain age or you find yourself in a certain circle in your community? All these and more can be somewhat valid reasons why we consider ourselves to be young. However, I like to think of being young in terms of not just a stage but an experience- the youth experience. An experience of unhindered openness and growth where we learn deeply, love freely and live passionately. This requires some level of curiosity and courage to peep beneath the surface of everyday life situations and to innovate.

Your goals, stress and anxiety

Karl listens to a motivational speaker who urges him to work on himself and become better and more successful. That sounds like a noble cause so he immediately goes to work on himself. He follows the first step, which is to draft all the areas he likes to work on. His list gives him ten areas which include: academics, finances, relationships and a little bit of everything.

He proceeds to the next step where he draws a rigorous timetable apportioning time for each of these areas. Within these times, he utilizes resources that aid in his development in the desired areas. That’s a good way to start his new year. He imagines how perfect he will be by the end of the year.

Down the line Karl realizes that he’s constantly filled with guilt whenever he fails to cross an item off his “development timetable”. The pull and drag of deadlines and commitments seem to be extremely stressful.

Hadn’t he gone on a noble cause to be more successful which should eventually make him happier? Now he feels like a complete failure for not diligently abiding by his timetable, and sad because he fails again no matter how hard he tries. He usually dreams about his goals personified mocking him for being too lazy and never good enough.

Like Karl, I have also struggled a lot of times to keep up with my “development timetable.” I know that you may also share this experience. Sometimes I wonder if there could ever be a solution to this perpectual struggle.

Goals are good but if they make us more stressed and anxious than we were before we had them, then that’s a problem. I really want goals to be a lot friendlier and not so devastating and fierce. I’m not talking about having it as a goal to lie in the couch all day and watch your favorite Netflix series (that can also be a great goal sometimes!) but really I’m talking about going higher in what feels natural and sustainable.

๐Ÿšซ This article is an excerpt from the upcoming issue of Adrenaline

If I have it as a goal to exercise for 12 hours each waking day, that’s great! I could sure do this for a couple of weeks or months but I can confidently tell you that I can’t exercise like that for the rest of my life. It’s just not possible.

Before you think I’m trying to find excuses for not doing what I should be doing remember that I started everything in the first place. There came a time that because of the period I was in exercise seemed to be a more reasonable venture to me so I decided “hey, why not double up on it?” And I did. I made it up because I thought that was the best.

Let’s say after a couple of years, I’m the CEO of a publishing company that’s international, it wouldn’t be so absurd that exercise would become less of a priority. Maybe my exercise routine will revolve around using the stairs instead of the elevator at work and walking to offices to make enquires instead of just placing a call. And all that would make complete sense to me at that level. My point? Goals shouldn’t be so rigid and restraining. In fact, the feeling of rigidity and excessive restrain we have when working with our goals is more of a feedback signalling to us that these goals need to be reviewed and upgraded to more natural and friendlier ones.

Oftentimes we get so much submerged in our goals to the point that we forget that they are our handiwork- we made them up. We find ourselves anxious and stressed from all that self-imposed pressure we innocently create.

Goals need not be so terrible; they could be fun- and they should. In that atmosphere of playfulness there’s a burst of creativity and wisdom for even the most complicated tasks. This goes beyond mere concept, you can try it for yourself. Review your goals and make them friendlier and doable and experience the immense freedom that comes from it. It’s a relief and at the same time a huge boost!

Remember to leave occasional pauses to savour the beauty of life. In these moments, you’ll realize that all that you seek you already are in essence. That beauty you witness is who you are at the core. And once you get back to work on your goals there’ll be no dread and haste but a reminiscent heart touched by the wonder of life. May our goals continue to bring us more of what we want and less of what we don’t want- stress and anxiety!
